Getting started

How do I connect with someone?

Open the Friends tab. Your code is at the top: 8 letters and numbers, shown like ABCD-EFGH. Tap Share to send your link, tap the code to copy it, or read it out loud. If someone gave you their code, type it into Have a code? on the same tab (with or without the dash). They get a request, and once they accept you can write notes for each other.

Nobody can search for you: people can only find you with your code or link.

Someone has my code and I don’t want them to

On the Friends tab, tap New code. Your old code and link stop working. Friends you already have are not affected.

The app says I tried too many codes

After a lot of wrong codes in a row, the app asks you to wait. Try again in 15 minutes, and check the code with the person who gave it to you.

My sign-in code didn’t arrive

Look in your spam or promotions folder for an email from Lunchbox Notes. If it isn’t there, go back and ask for a new code, and check the email address for typos. Codes run out after 10 minutes.

Is it on Android?

It will be: Lunchbox Notes is coming to the App Store and Google Play. Join the list and choose your phone to hear when it’s out.

Kids

How do I set up my kid’s device?

Your kid doesn’t need an email, a phone number or a picture.

1. In the Profile tab, tap Add a kid, type their name and tap Make the lunchbox.
2. Their device code appears next to their name, like ABCD-EFGH. Tap it to copy, or tap Share.
3. On your kid’s device, open Lunchbox Notes, tap I have a lunchbox code and enter the code.

You can start writing notes for them right away, even before their device is set up. A device code works for 7 days; if it ran out, tap New code next to your kid’s name.

My kid has a new phone or tablet

In the Profile tab, tap New device next to your kid’s name. Their old device is signed out of the lunchbox, their notes stay, and you get a new code to set up the new device.

To sign a device out without setting up a new one, open the Profile tab on the kid’s device and tap Leave this lunchbox. You can share a new code any time.

Can other people write for my kid?

Only people you add or say yes to. Friends never see your kids in the app. Open Profile → Your kids, tap Let a friend write for… under your kid’s name, and pick one of your friends; they get told they can write for your kid now. Or share your kid’s writer code (on the same screen) with a grown-up: they enter it to ask, and you say yes or no. New code there makes the old one stop working.

What can I see of my kid’s lunchbox?

You see the notes in it, you can read the chats under your kid’s notes (you can’t write in them), and you can see and lift the blocks your kid has made.

Notes and the widget

How do I add the widget?

On iPhone, touch and hold an empty spot on your home screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and choose Lunchbox Notes. Pick a friend and it always shows their latest note; leave the friend empty and it shows the newest note from anyone. It updates on its own when a new note arrives.

What happens to older notes?

Each person who writes for you has one note on your lunchbox. When they send a new one, the older one moves to your Memory box, where every note is kept. You can pin a favorite or share it.

Does the sender know I read their note?

No. There are no read receipts. You can send a reaction or a message if you want them to know.

How does sharing a note work?

Open the note and tap Share. You can send a link or the picture. A link works for 30 days, and anyone who has it can see the note. To end it sooner, tap Share again and then Stop sharing. Kids’ devices can’t share links.

Can I hide note text on my lock screen?

Notifications show the writer’s name and the note’s words or the message. To hide them, open your phone’s Settings → Notifications → Lunchbox Notes and change Show Previews, or turn notifications off.

Safety

How do I block someone?

On their profile, tap Block. On a note they sent you, open the menu and tap Block. New notes, messages and reactions between you stop, and you are no longer friends. Your earlier notes stay in your Memory box. You can find the people you blocked, and unblock them, in the Profile tab.

How do I report something?

• A person: on their profile, tap Report.
• A note: on the note, open the menu and tap Report this note.
• A chat message: hold the message.

Pick a reason and add a comment if you like. A person on our team looks at every report. The person you reported is not told who reported them. For something urgent or illegal, you can also write to contact@lunchboxnotes.app.

My account is paused

That follows a report about something you sent. You can still read everything, but what you send doesn’t go out. If you think this is a mistake, write to us.

Your account

How do I change my name or picture?

In the Profile tab. People you are connected with may have given you their own nickname; that is what they see instead of your name.

How do I delete my account?

In the Profile tab, tap Delete account and type DELETE. Your account is erased after 14 days. No app? Email us from the address you sign in with. What happens next.
